When designing your house, I’m sure plenty of you felt the temptation to do something really bold and colorful. And what better way to express your colorful and complicated side than with the use of bold upholstery?
If the standard and boring upholstery is not up your alley, I completely feel your pain. My story was no different – I also felt the need to add some glamorous accent to my home but had no idea how to do it, fearing I could wreck the entire design of my house if I went a bit too crazy with the paint on my walls or the tiles on the floor. However, with the upholstery, there is nothing to fear – after all, if something goes wrong and the final effect doesn’t satisfy you, there is nothing stopping you from just ditching the upholstery and going back to the standard one.
If you’re looking for inspirations to help you add some color, life, and uniqueness to your interior, you couldn’t have found any better – in this article, I’ll show you plenty of amazing solutions to do all that, and more, through the use of bold upholstery.
Break the boredom
Who said you have to start slow? Let’s hop right into the subject of bold upholstery with this piece of art. Notice how the interior is overall very traditional and toned down, with the white wall behind, brown floor and pretty ordinary plants. I’m quite sure that before this amazing sofa was introduced into the room, there was absolutely nothing to look at in the interior – okay, what I’m trying to say, it was as boring as it gets. But now look at the pillows and the upholstery. For some weird reason, despite how extravagant the upholstery is, it all seems to fit right in. The key to such effect is not using any other flashy decorations in the view range, and directing all the attention towards the sofa as the focal point in your room. Absolutely stunning effect.
Vanilla strawberry upholstery
This one is a bit more tricky, as it requires more commitment in the other departments around the room, and not only the upholstery, to successfully work as a whole. The pink sofa fits very well, but that’s partly due to the hem on the curtains, which is of the same color. Now, with the walls and toned down decoration elements, it creates the pleasing vanilla strawberry effect in the room, which is subtly contrasted by the blue stripes on the pillows, which saves it from being too boring and flat. The final effect is truly glamorous, creating an interior which can bring a true peace of mind to anyone who rests there.
Light, cheerful and peaceful
Now, this living room might seem pretty ordinary at first glance, but if you try adding such upholstery as the one on this chair into a room that’s not prepared for it, before you know it you’ll find yourself in a room where every piece of furniture fights for its place. Just imagine how boring would that room be if the chair wasn’t covered in blue upholstery, but in the gray one as the one on the sofa? Yeah, nothing to write home about. Obviously, the key to achieving balance in such a room are the hanging lamps of the same color as the blue upholstery and the blanket, but also the bare, wide windows. The final effect makes an impression as if a bit of the blue, bright sky from the outside was invited inside the house. Also, the entirety of the walls and ceiling kept white, help the owner achieve a light and bright interior.
This one is quite similar to the previous example, yet a bit more extravagant because the pattern on the upholstery is a bit more complicated, yet the final effect revolves around the same concept – inviting the sky inside though the wide, open windows or door, then reflecting it on the upholstery. Notice the painting on the wall, depicting water – all in all, the aim was to underline the blue elements of nature, such as the water and the sky, inside of the owners house. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t mind resting in such a cheerful and peaceful interior. The upholstery might be bold, yet the effect is harmonic – intriguing, isn’t it?
Abstract and floral upholstery
This one works mainly because of the flowers, which create the focal point of this interior, providing a hint for the human brain so it doesn’t have to wonder what the hell is going on here. With the addition of the flowers, we’re able to instantly understand the concept of the upholstery of the chairs resembling the colors of nature. Another interesting thing is the transparent chair legs, which helps you focus on the flowers and the upholstery without any additional distraction. The white, bare glass door in the background also help invite some more nature inside. I can’t imagine such upholstery working in different conditions than the ones presented to you in this picture. Bold, yet successful.
Luxurious focal point
It’s hard to make purple chairs work, but with a proper use of colors, it’s doable. Take a look at this example – the white, yet right carpet and extravagant lamp create an excellent scene on which the purple upholstery get’s the spotlight to really shine. Notice how half the wall is painted black, which is works great with the black chair legs. The final effect is an extravagant, luxurious interior, where bold elements don’t feel out of place and mismatched.
Eclectic living room
Bold upholstery works especially well when you’re going for the eclectic design, like one one presented to you in the picture. The owner of this living room matched a traditional, brick fireplace with a modern bar area, with typically modern hanging lamps and plafonds on the ceiling, with the extravagant upholstery on the armchairs and colorful pillows. To make the long story short, the pillows and armchairs would normally belong in something more textile-oriented, such as the English cottage style, but somehow make for a great addition to this eclectic living room. There is a lot of red color going on in this interior, despite that the fireplace, floor, and walls are rather toned down, gray or brown.
Bold upholstery also works extremely well when we’re planning our interiors to underline the minimal and simple characteristics, but don’t want them to be too simple and boring. Just look at the picture attached – everything in this living room is as simple and minimalistic as it gets, yet because of the vibrant red chair and the interesting, asymmetrical colors of the sofa upholstery, you can’t really call it plain. When trying to introduce some bold upholstery to our interiors, it’s always a safe bet to underline the big, bare windows, as without proper illumination in the room, such bold colors can make the room a bit overwhelming and gloomy. However, if you invite the daylight in, you won’t have to fear any of these happening – the interior will be fresh, interesting and lively.
Like an art gallery
When going for a very modern feeling inside you house, there is nothing better than bold upholstery – as long as you know how to properly incorporate it, that is. Look at this dining room. The painting on the wall already makes the place look as if it was an art gallery, further enhanced by all the small additions and decorations. However, if it wasn’t for the abstract upholstery on the dining chairs, the place would feel disjointed, unconnected – half of the room, near the paintings, would feel as if it was something else, and the dining part would be just another room, just without the wall. However, the bold upholstery on the chairs successfully connects the whole design, making it all a one, spacious and cohesive interior. If you just imagine this room without these chairs, I’m sure you’ll have no trouble agreeing with me.
Luxurious and extravagant
This one is a bit tricky, so keep that in mind before you try it out on your own. The black walls and grand fireplace make for a really overwhelming composition, and I’d be a bit scared to spend the night in such a house myself if the rest of the house are kept in the similar design. However, to break this atmosphere, the owner introduced some really radiant colors – notice, these aren’t toned down and peaceful hues of green, blue and yellow, but actually really in-your-face kinds of colors. Despite that, I’m quite sure anything weaker than that wouldn’t have worked, as the black walls and the fireplace truly needed a very strong answer. Now, the interior changes from grim and overwhelming to interesting and extravagant, and because the colors are so rich, also to luxurious. I wouldn’t mind such a living room myself, after the changes.
Luxurious gold upholstery
We all know that there is nothing more luxurious than the traditional, gold color in your house – and if you don’t want to introduce it in the standard, boring way, for example on the door hardware, think about golden upholstery. In the picture, you can see how the golden curtains and upholstery invited the luxurious feeling to the living room, yet without making it too obnoxious and in-your-face. Also, the red armchair in the corner creates a very stylish accent point in this living room, which breaks the serious, traditional feeling of this room, adding a bit of cheer and humor. A really nice mixture of luxurious and humorous design, if I may say so.
I’m quite sure no teenage daughter of yours would have anything against such a sofa in her room. To finish my list of inspirations regarding the use of bold upholstery, let’s take a look at this interior, which may be a bit less serious because we all know that when talking about teenagers, and especially a daughter, everything goes. Still, this room is very well planned – the dark walls create a very nice background for the pink and orange colors on the sofa, and the pinboard filled with dots stays cohesive with the upholstery. The bottom line is, bold upholstery can be used anywhere, not only in the living rooms.
This sums up my list of inspirations regarding the use of bold upholstery in your house. I’m sure by now you have a pretty strong idea about the whole matter, and can decide whether the bold upholstery is something up your alley, or not.
